51i3qXzchcL._SX332_BO1,204,203,200_Half-Blood, by Jennifer L. Armentrout

The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi—pure-bloods—have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals—well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures.

Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:

Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden.

Unfortunately, she’s crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn’t her biggest problem–staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

51S8Cam2GbL._SX334_BO1,204,203,200_Cold Kiss, by Amy Garvey

It was a beautiful, warm summer day, the day Danny died.

Suddenly Wren was alone and shattered. In a heartbroken fury, armed with dark incantations and a secret power, Wren decides that what she wants—what she must do—is to bring Danny back.

But the Danny who returns is just a shell of the boy Wren fell in love with. His touch is icy; his skin, smooth and stiff as marble; his chest, cruelly silent when Wren rests her head against it.

Wren must keep Danny a secret, hiding him away, visiting him at night, while her life slowly unravels around her. Then Gabriel DeMarnes transfers to her school, and Wren realizes that somehow, inexplicably, he can sense the powers that lie within her—and that he knows what she has done. And now Gabriel wants to help make things right.

But Wren alone has to undo what she has wrought—even if it means breaking her heart all over again.

51ZzYtXobyL._SX322_BO1,204,203,200_Breath of Angel, by Karyn Henley

The stranger’s cloak had fallen back, and with it, a long, white, blood-stained wing.

When Melaia, a young priestess, witnesses the gruesome murder of a stranger in the temple courtyard, age-old legends recited in song suddenly come to life. She discovers wings on the stranger, and the murderer takes the shape of both a hawk and a man.

Angels. Shape-shifters. Myths and stories—until now.

Melaia finds herself in the middle of a blood feud between two immortal brothers who destroyed the stairway to heaven, stranding angels in the earthly realm. When Melaia becomes a target, she finds refuge with a band of angels attempting to restore the stairway. But the restoration is impossible without settling an ancient debt—the “breath of angel, blood of man,” a payment that involves Melaia’s heart, soul, and destiny.

Holiday Giveaway Day 1: Scifi pack and signed Paolini photo!

We’re excited to kick off our ten days of holiday giveaways with Rachel Bach’s amazing scifi series, The Paradox Trilogy, which consists of Fortune’s Pawn, Honor’s Knight, and Heaven’s Queen. This series has gotten rave reviews, and we’re so excited to share it with you. We’re also throwing in a signed picture of Christopher Paolini with the book pack, for an extra fun gift. Be sure to enter below!

What are the books about? Here’s some info on book one, Fortune’s Pawn:

œF$¿Æ‘$8Òò¤»däå¸R8BIDevi Morris isn’t your average mercenary. She has plans. Big ones. And a ton of ambition. It’s a combination that’s going to get her killed one day – but not just yet.
That is, until she just gets a job on a tiny trade ship with a nasty reputation for surprises. The Glorious Fool isn’t misnamed: it likes to get into trouble, so much so that one year of security work under its captain is equal to five years everywhere else. With odds like that, Devi knows she’s found the perfect way to get the jump on the next part of her Plan. But the Fool doesn’t give up its secrets without a fight, and one year on this ship might be more than even Devi can handle.
If Sigouney Weaver in Alien met Starbuck in Battlestar Galactica, you’d get Deviana Morris — a hot new mercenary earning her stripes to join an elite fighting force. Until one alien bite throws her whole future into jeopardy.

What we’re reading this week, plus our final spring cleaning giveaway (and it’s international)!

_LMZ8510 copy

Can you believe April is almost over? We’ve enjoyed sharing what we’re reading this month and hearing what you’re enjoying week to week as well. We hope to make this a regular thing, and we’re excited to spread the love of great scifi and fantasy books. Here’s what we’re reading this week!

61KW8eu2uVL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_I’m continuing my reading for the April Lytherus book club with the Shadow Scale audiobook, also by Rachel Harman. In this sequel to Seraphina, she heads out on the road to find others like her. My absolute favorite kind of books are quest books, so I’m thoroughly enjoying Seraphina’s journey. The other half-dragons we’ve encountered are pretty amazing, and I can only imagine how much fun Rachel had thinking up all these different and unique characters. And they really are characters, with their unique quirks and traits.

We are also getting a lot of back story into a seriously creepy character, one that is only mentioned briefly from time to time in the first book. She’s turning into the big baddie of book two. Like everything else in this series, the story is vividly told, and filled with both horror and empathy. I’m not quite done with it, but I can’t wait to see where it goes. The audiobook has the same narrator as book 1, so that’s also been fun, staying with her.

18952341This week I tackled Ken Liu’s GRACE OF KINGS. I admit I’m still about fifty pages from the end, but at this point I feel confident that he would have to do something really spectacular to mess this book up. Epic high fantasy is the genre I love deepest, and a new series never fails to excite me. However, they can sometime require more effort than they’re worth. Large casts roving across sprawling worlds require skillful handling in order for the story to flow. Large amounts of history are generally needed to understand all the stakes and has to be delivered to the reader without compromising the structure. I spend a lot of epic fantasies flipping back and forth trying to keep track of who’s who, where they are, and what they’re trying to achieve. With GRACE OF KINGS I never looked back. This dynastic story grabbed me right out of the gate and never faltered. I knew and cared about each person and learned so much about this new world without ever noticing the information slide into the narrative. I can’t recommended this book highly enough, particularly for fans of Brandon Sanderson’s MISTBORN and Patrick Rothfuss’ KINGKILLER books.

22489107For our last week, I read FAIREST by Marissa Meyer. This book is part of The Lunar Chronicles series, but it’s a prequel to all the other books. For those who don’t know every book in this series is based on a fairytale with a futuristic science-fiction twist, and this one is loosely based on the Evil Queen character from Snow White. The previous books were a very pleasant surprise to me, and I loved each one of them. This one was not different.
I have a soft spot for well developed villains. So I had high expectations for a book solely focused on one, and how she became the person she is in the other books. And although this one is smaller than the other novels, it was the perfect size with the perfect amount of information. We had insight on characters that we had merely heard about before, but it explained so much, and it enriched the backstory and motivation of a character that is so important throughout the series. You don’t need to read this book to understand the rest of the plot, but it definitely helps, at least to have a better understanding of Queen Levana.
I can’t say much without spoiling the rest of the series. For those who haven’t read it yet and like science-fiction and YA, I definitely recommend the series. For fans of the series who don’t know if they should read this prequel – I say get on it! Marissa Meyer is a great writer, and I can never put her books down. I can barely wait for the last one coming out in November!
For our last spring cleaning giveaway we decided to go scifi! We have some absolutely fantastic books for you, and, like usual, some wonderful signed Christopher Paolini swag as well!

These are some seriously amazing books. The Girl With All the Gifts has nominated for a slew of awards, and won some too, and a movie is in the works. Ancillary Justice won the Hugo and the Nebula in 2014 for best novel. The other two have high ratings on Goodreads and other accolades.

Book Reviews, Books, Reviews

What are we reading this week? “Hawkeye,” “Mark of the Thief,” and more!

Last week we started a spring cleaning of our giveaway shelves, and to enter you had to tell us what books you’re enjoying right now. We got a lot of really cool answers, so be sure to check them out:

Here’s what some of our staffers have been enjoying this week:

the great zoo of chinaI’m fairly new to comics and am always looking for the titles I can read without needing fifty years of backstory. So, this week I bowed to the collective wisdom of the internet and gave Matt Fraction’sHawkeye a try. It definitely was one of the best stand alone comics I’ve read, but I struggled with it a bit since I couldn’t quite get the comic Hawkeye and the movie Hawkeye who I met first to mesh. I’ll definitely be checking out the rest of the run though — if nothing else, Kate Bishop is probably the funniest comic character I’ve met yet.
I also read The Great Zoo of China. I’d be tempted to sum up this book with, “it’s Jurassic Park but with dragons,” but that really isn’t terribly accurate. For one thing, everyone in the book is very aware ofJurassic Park and does in fact bring up the startling similarities between it and the new zoo in a “who seriously thought this was a good idea” type way. Secondly, Crichton’s novel was actually heavily based in science. Reilly’s novel is much more fantasy driven. Because it’s not pretending pretending to beJurassic Park 2.0, The Great Zoo of China really succeeds at being a clever, modern day, thriller type novel. I highly recommend it!

kiss of deceptionI listened to the audiobook for the first book in Jennifer A. Nielsen’s new series, Mark of the Thief. I adored The False Prince series, and this one sounded right up my alley, as it was about ancient Rome. I didn’t enjoy it as much as the first series, which made me sad. It seemed to lull a bit in places for me. But I did find it overall interesting, and the magic in the story is really cool. Plus, there’s a gryphon, which is awesome.
I’m currently about 3/4 done with the audiobook of The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson. So many of my book friends adored this book, and I am kicking myself for waiting so long. I cannot believe how much I love this story. It’s about a princess who runs away from her arranged marriage, and is followed by the prince and also an assassin from a rival kingdom. They both befriend her, and the way the story plays out between the three of them is soooo coooool. There’s really interesting talk of magic too, though we’ve only gotten tastes of it up to this point. But I can already say, just for the back and forth between the three main characters, I’ll definitely be recommending it. I cannot wait to see how it ends, and I’ve already lined up borrowing the ARC of book 2!

clementineI just finished CLEMENTINE, by Cherie Priest, a sort of sequel to BONESHAKER in The Clockwork Century series. But you can read both separately, because although CLEMENTINE has a few common characters with the other book, they didn’t have a lot of “screen time” there.
I loved so much about the previous book that this felt… flat, in comparison. Don’t get me wrong, I still liked it. Cherie Priest is a brilliant writer, and her imagery and descriptions are great (specially all the steampunk details), but since this is a sequel, even if just indirectly, I couldn’t help but compare it to BONESHAKER. And CLEMENTINE didn’t have a lot to make it stand out, to make me read hours without stopping, nothing that surprised me. The characters and setting are interesting, but the plot itself suffers from the small size of the book. It seems like the main conflict falls out of nowhere and ends up feeling anti-climatic, despite some epic airship battles. There was something missing. I felt like the story needed more time to be developed, so more chapters would definitely have made this better.
But I think I wouldn’t have skipped this book if I knew beforehand. It was still an entertaining read, and Priest is an amazing writer. The steampunk worldbuilding aspects of the story are still good, as they were in the other book, and they’re gritty and very well developed. It’s a good, quick adventure, and even though it doesn’t compare to the previous book, it’s still an interesting addition to the series.

We’re also on week two of our April spring cleaning giveaway! We’re doing both a US giveaway and an international giveaway, so there’s something for everyone!

We have so many cool James Dashner books right now that we wanted to share some of the Dashner love this week. For the US crowd we have four books: The movie tie-in cover of The Maze Runner, a Maze Runner movie guide, an ARC of The Eye of Minds, and a hardback of The Rule of Thoughts!

What are we reading? Plus, our first Spring Cleaning Giveaway!

what are we reading header

We’ve been enjoying lots of amazing books recently over here at Lytherus, and we wanted to share some of our favorites so you can have even more books on your to-read pile!

Here’s what some of us are reading this week:

sagaI’ve just finished binge-reading Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples. I don’t know why I hadn’t read this sooner, because it’s absolutely amazing. But when I suddenly felt like reading graphic novels, this seemed like a good choice, everyone spoke wonders about it. And yet I was still surprised, even with all the praise I had read about it.

It’s amazingly written and drawn, it’s fun and speaks about important themes at the same time, and it’s such a universal story, such an epic, well, saga! I can see why people compare it to Star Wars (one of the reasons I initially started to read it, not going to lie), but it’s its own story with its own merit and without a doubt with the potential to be a classic on its own. You care about the characters and they are all very well developed with their own stories and motivations, whether they’re villains, heroes, or just secondary characters. The way their stories interwoven, how previous plots make a comeback to surprise you, and how each chapter ends in cliffhangers just makes you keep reading and reading. I read the 4 volumes that are already out too quickly, and now I’m in withdrawal. I need more (I also need suggestions of more graphic novels, throw them at me)!! Now I’m starting to read Clementine by Chérie Priest, but I’ll tell you more about that next week!

the just city The Just City by Jo Walton. I grabbed this book based on the blurb alone which is something I usually try to avoid after being repeatedly disappointed. Not today! I think someone unfamiliar with Plato’s Republic and Greek mythology would still find this book extremely well written and intriguing. As someone who has studied both, I find it insanely intelligent and deliciously subversive. While I’ve probably read a book’s worth of Walton’s online nonfiction, this is the first novel I’ve read by her, and I now fully intended to go binge read the rest.

snow like ashes I just finished the audiobook of Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch, and it was AMAZING. There are eight kingdoms in this world, and four of them are season-based. Winter’s kingdom was overrun by Spring, and though most of the Winterians are in workers camps, twenty-five escaped when the fighting happened, and they’ve spent the years trying to get their kingdom back. To do this they need a magical locket that Spring took. The book revolves around an orphan girl who was one of the twenty-five, and her trials as she deals with love, loyalty, and loss. This book was simply fantastic, and I highly recommend it to those who enjoy YA fantasy. It’s a fresh, new idea, and yet there are lots of familiar fantasy elements that fans will love.

Also, it’s Friday, which means it’s time to kick off our April book giveaways! What are the series about? Here are the blurbs of the first books:

iron thornIn the city of Lovecraft, the Proctors rule and a great Engine turns below the streets, grinding any resistance to their order to dust. The necrovirus is blamed for Lovecraft’s epidemic of madness, for the strange and eldritch creatures that roam the streets after dark, and for everything that the city leaders deem Heretical—born of the belief in magic and witchcraft. And for Aoife Grayson, her time is growing shorter by the day.
Aoife Grayson’s family is unique, in the worst way—every one of them, including her mother and her elder brother Conrad, has gone mad on their 16th birthday. And now, a ward of the state, and one of the only female students at the School of Engines, she is trying to pretend that her fate can be different.

incarceronIncarceron is a prison so vast that it contains not only cells and corridors, but metal forests, dilapidated cities, and wilderness. It has been sealed for centuries, and only one man has ever escaped. Finn has always been a prisoner here. Although he has no memory of his childhood, he is sure he came from Outside. His link to the Outside, his chance to break free, is Claudia, the warden’s daughter, herself determined to escape an arranged marriage. They are up against impossible odds, but one thing looms above all: Incarceron itself is alive . . .
